I tend to take a control approach, rather than all the mess of grabbing both hands, i tend to step a bit off the attackers line of attack, normally to the left perhaps because i’m left handed, grab his right wrist with both hands, execute Ikkyo or some varient, sankkyo also depending upon the terrain and the attackers body type, it’s like a dance to one must dance a bit, keeping centre low, using whole body turn counter clockwise generally but it actually works both ways which is nice because it keeps it simple. Keep in mind that in order for your attacker to help you execute the technique you can trigger a motion on their part with a feint, a push the purpose of which is to get your opening to push back in the direction you really want to go. If someone wants to box with you, pretend to box in return but really you are going for the wrist/arm lock, Ikkyo. It works and that is why similar wrist lock techniques are found in many martial arts of various cultures going back 1000’s of years. I’m not an expert i just use what works. A nice thing about this approach is that it enables one to prevent attack, take control of the opponent and not necessarily injure them badly in the process. A take down may be nessesary depending upon situation; i like to hasten that process by kicking out the back of the knee with a low push kick, you can hop up onto the top of the calf and use your whole body weight for this, like climbing a ladder. Important then to realize that you are going down together and to be ready for their weight to pull you down at which point one of your knees, your left knee should be ready to press upon the lower back while you continue to crank and twist arm behind attacker’s back, also controlling the head with right hand. At this point opponent’s arm can be broken or not depending upon severity of the attack, situational context. For example if there are multiple attackers it may be necessary to disable your attacker in this way. In other scenarios it will be best to tell your attacker to chill out, you don’t want to hurt them but have a right to defend yourself and that they are responsible for their actions. This may calm them down, may not, your call at that point but try not to break anyone’s arm if you can help it. Another note, if i do strike it’s normally NOT with the knuckles as knuckles are easily damaged, an open palm strike under the chin, using the heel of the hand if far preferable and even more so a side hammer strike is very effective and most people who take a boxing approach are not expecting such strikes. Sometimes i will fake a strike, a feint in order to get opponent to put up that arm to block but it was not the head i was going for but just wanted that arm to hang there for a bit, a second or two is enough because when engages in hand to hand combat time does seem to slow down and reaction time along with having a plan as to what to do with that time is very important. I learned a few Aikido techniques along with Judo when i was 10 years old and the stuff that i learned in that class and from my Japanese friend, Massito, saved my ass in high school and beyond; simple effective techniques and techniques with good karma as, as mentioned, you can gain control of attacker while not seriously injuring them and, hopefully, reaching a peaceful resolution of the conflict.

Nice. In Taichi, that controlling/connecting skill with or without grip is foundational to the art. And the process is described in detail in the Taichi method (though it's pretty hard to understand the meaning). That pressure which engages the fascia into floating/rising/expanding and controlling the opponents body is called Peng Jin. It's a specific type of energy. And when we have control of our opponents, it's called Na Jin. It seems Aikido doesn't have a vocabulary, definition or formalized process for that skill. Or, at least, you are not using it. In Taichi, the process is double and happen simultaneously: 1) Stick, adhere, join, follow 2) Listen, transform, seize/control, (emit) What is the name of that skill in Aikido?

Ueshiba was a high priest in the Omoto Kyo cult and Ueshiba stated in his book that the physical teachings of Ai ki do was not for fighting but for exercise only. Yet we looked the other way when he said that. And we disagreed with O'sensei as we kept insisting Aikido is a fighting art. Then when aikido masters get dominated by wrestlers, jiujitsuteros, Judokas and MMA athletes we make excuses. When I left aikido to train daito ryu I learned they were not the same, as aikidoka claim, and I found daito ryu is for combat and aikido is exactly what O'sensei claimed Aikido was: physical exercise program for the Omoto Kyo cult. Can you learn self defense from aikido? More people die annually by falling in their home than by street fights. Ukemi is a valuable self defense art.

People make the mistake of confusing Aikido as a form of fighting. It is physically impossible to fight and do Aikido at the same time - you can switch between fighting and Aikido but you cannot do both simultaneously. Aikido is a martial art that works with the Aikido defender who is physically uniting in harmony with an aggressor who is fighting. It is nonsensical to try to rely on Aikido to win a fight within a fighting sport - the sport has rules in place that mandate fighting and the Aikido defender cannot physically fight when they try to do Aikido.

great vid. Attacking the head is so important in aikido, even if it is done from of centre line movements. Almost all moves involve changing the position of the head relative to the body, even if these are techniques on the arm (since it enable unbalancing opponent ) i.e. like changing position of uke's head through a strong grab.
